A Brief History of the Black American Heritage Flag

A Brief History of the Black American Heritage Flag

The Black American Heritage Flag isn't just a symbol of pride and achievement for us Black Americans. It's way more than that – it embodies our journey, the struggles, and the pain that's been etched into our history. It's about honoring our triumphs while acknowledging the hardships we've faced, all with the aim of forging progress and offering hope to our community.

Now, this flag ain't just thrown together randomly. It's got a deep, meaningful design behind it. The colors, for starters: red stands for the innocent blood that's been spilled throughout America's history, while black represents our unshakable pride in the Black race. That golden symbol in the mix? It's all about intellect, prosperity and peace.

And let's not forget that symbol itself – a blunted sword and a fig wreath. That sword? It's there to pump us up with pride. The fig wreath? It's all about peace, prosperity, and the promise of a better, everlasting life.

Melvin Charles and Gleason T. Jackson, the masterminds behind this flag, came up with it back in 1967. But their inspiration goes way back. Charles saw other groups, like those with Italian or Hispanic heritage, proudly waving their flags at parades, while African Americans didn't have one. So, they put their heads together, did their research, and poured their hearts into creating the Black American Heritage Flag. Charles had a chat with PBS about it, and he shared just how much thought and intentionality went into this powerful symbol.

Because so many brothers and sisters have expressed that they don’t wish to wear the American flag in any fashion over the years, we have adopted the Black American Heritage flag to represent Black Americans instead of the Stars & Stripes.
