The Mental Illness Flag

The Mental Illness Flag

This flag represents my experience with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. It explores the tension between perception and reality, showing how mental illness shapes experience. Rather than depicting only darkness or despair, the design acknowledges complexity: clarity with confusion, insight with uncertainty.

The Field

The flag is divided vertically into black and white, symbolizing perception's dual nature. These halves reflect opposites in the mind: reality and delusion, certainty and doubt, order and chaos, light and shadow. The sharp division shows how different interpretations can exist at once, each seeming convincing.

The Charge

At the flag's center is a stylized eye, representing perception, awareness, and consciousness. For many with serious mental illness, perception is the central struggle. The eye also acknowledges feeling watched or scrutinized, which can accompany psychosis or anxiety.

Surrounding the eye is a radiating starburst, symbolizing heightened sensitivity to thoughts, emotions, and the environment. These rays evoke moments when the mind feels overstimulated, when ordinary experiences seem unusually vivid or significant. They also suggest that hallucinations, intrusive thoughts, or altered perceptions can extend beyond everyday reality.

Positioned directly between the black and white halves, the eye serves as a reminder that people living with mental illness are constantly navigating the space between different ways of understanding the world, searching for balance while holding onto their sense of self.

Overall Meaning

This flag is a visual expression of living with mental illness. It acknowledges the challenges of navigating competing perceptions while affirming the humanity of those who experience them. The central eye reminds us that people with mental illness are not defined solely by their diagnoses. We observe, create, love, struggle, and endure. Our experiences may differ from others', but they are real to us and deserve compassion, understanding, and dignity.
